Sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office yesterday, way past my appointment time, of course, I started thinking about all the times this has happened. I don’t mind it once in awhile – one person with a big issue who needs extra time with the doctor can throw off the whole schedule, but if that person is having that much trouble, I certainly wouldn’t begrudge them the extra time or get upset with the doctor. So it happens sometimes, and I don’t sweat it at all, from a service standpoint. It’s when it consistently happens with the same office that drives me bat-shit crazy. I realize that, with the way insurance works these days, doctors need to cram in as many appointments as they can during the day in order to make money. I get it, I really do, but things have gotten out of hand. I’m in the waiting room, it’s 10:15, which is 45 minutes past my appointment time and people are huffing and puffing. I asked everyone what time their appointments were scheduled for. Three of them said 9:30. Surely not with the same doctor in the practice as mine? Yep, same doctor. So four people were booked with the same doctor at the same time. This has nothing to do with a patient needing more time with the doctor. PLEASE STOP DOING EVERYTHING YOURSELF! It’s the beginning of the year, a time to start fresh, right? Right. So I’d like to give you a tip for your business. It’s nothing earth-shattering, nothing new or different, but it’s one of the most overlooked things out there and most people don’t do it. Are you ready for it? You’re sure? DON’T TRY TO DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF! Yep, that’s it. Now I know you’re rolling your eyes – Okay, Jeryl, okay – we’ve heard that a million times – thanks so much for the “valuable tip”. Just humor me for a few minutes. Grab a piece of paper and a pen. Go on! Now, draw a vertical line down the center of the paper, dividing it into two columns. Title the left side “Things That Make Me Money”. Title the right side “Other Stuff”. You know what comes next, right? Start writing. Write down every single thing you do throughout the day. If it’s something that directly leads to you making money – like holding webinars, doing Google Hangouts, creating content for a product, shooting videos, etc. – put that under “Things That Make Me Money”. If it’s something that does NOT directly lead to you making money – dealing with client and prospect inquiries, setting up campaigns in your CRM system, gathering info for reporting, going back and forth with venues for an event you might be holding, anything like that – put it under “Other Stuff”. Now, if you’re someone who really needed to do this exercise, I’ll bet the “Other Stuff” column is a lot longer than...
